1.1 - Aims

World Class Tests aim to improve learning and achievement in schools and identify gifted and talented students. The tests will:

  • recognise individual achievement in mathematics and problem solving;
  • match the achievements of the best 10 per cent of nine and 13 year-old students in the best performing, English-speaking countries, as identified in international surveys, and provide a formal recognition of that achievement;
  • use innovative approaches to the assessment of gifted and talented children, using new techniques and technologies.

World Class Tests form part of the World Class Arena, which also provides resources and support materials for gifted and talented students. The World Class Arena website is the 'nerve centre' for the programme and can be found at www.worldclassarena.org.

1.2 - The role of AQA

This handbook is distributed by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), the UK's largest public awarding body. AQA deliver and administer World Class Tests to participating World Class Test schools and centres.

This handbook provides administrators, teachers, IT technicians and Heads of centres with information and guidance on World Class Test administration and assessment arrangements for 2003.

It is important that all teachers and administrators who will be involved in World Class Tests have a copy of this handbook. Further copies may be downloaded from http://www.worldclassarena.org/wcthandbook.pdf. Alternatively, hard copies may be requested from info@worldclassarena.org.

Please note that many of the screen-shots used in the handbook are produced using Internet Explorer 5.5 and Windows Explorer; there may be slight variations if the school or centre uses other packages.

1.3 - Contacting AQA

AQA operates a dedicated World Class Arena helpline during UK office hours on (44) (0) 8700 101 798. An answerphone is in operation outside these hours, and a qualified member of staff will return your call as soon as possible. Further information or guidance about any World Class Arena issues may also be requested by e-mailing info@worldclassarena.org.
